IFFA CELEBRATES THE MUSIC OF SOUTHERN IRAN AND PAYS TRIBUTE TO ACCLAIMED DIRECTOR KAMBUZIA PARTOVI
The Iranian Film Festival Australia’s full 2021 line up has been revealed including 10 films selected in competition. This 10th edition of IFFA features a stunning selection of new and recent acclaimed and award-winning features, celebrating the diverse and thought-provoking riches of Iranian cinema.
Festival director, Armin Miladi, said:
“This year despite the COVID pandemic we have had a very strong year for Iranian cinema, enabling us to present a fantastic and diverse range of films for our audiences in Australia. We are delighted to present three films from female filmmakers this year including opening night film ‘Titi’ by Ida Panahandeh; we pay tribute to the acclaimed director Kambuzia Partovi with the premiere of ‘his final film The Truck (Kamion-2018)’ our closing night film, and we present a focus on the culture & music of the Southern Iran (next to the Persian Gulf) showcasing two documentaries, ‘Chicheka Lullaby’ and ‘Sebaloo’, and Manijeh Hekmat’s recent hit, ‘Bandar Band.”
IFFA 2021 highlights include:
Opening night film TiTi, written, produced and directed by Ida Panahandeh, is the story of a hospitalized, critically ill physicist, working on a theory about black holes and the end of the world, who meets a rather eccentric hospital housekeeper named TiTi. When the physicist falls into a deep coma, TiTi, raised by Iranian gypsies and possessing supernatural powers, performs a strange ritual to save him. This is the start of an odyssey that changes their lives forever.

THE WASTELAND (Dasht-E Khamoush) is an incisive look at life on the outskirts of Iranian society. A remote brick manufacture factory produces bricks in an ancient way. Many families with different ethnicities work in the factory and the boss seems to hold the key to solving their problems. Forty-year-old Lotfollah, who has been born on-site, is the factory supervisor and acts as go-between for the workers and the boss.

SUN CHILDREN, directed by Majid Majidi, is the story of 12-year-old Ali and his three friends who work hard together to survive and support their families, doing small jobs in a garage and committing petty crimes to make fast cash.

In writer director Massoud Bakhshi’s YALDA: A NIGHT OF FORGIVENESS, a young woman sentenced to death, seeks atonement on live television. The riveting and superbly acted Iranian drama, based on a real variety show, poses a moral crucible born out of a theocratic system that disfavours women amid the heightened tension of the on-camera spectacle.

THE TRUCK (Kamion) is the final film by director Kambuzia Partovi. A Yazidi woman and her two children manage to escape from an ISIS massacre. Helped by a truck driver, they go to Tehran looking for her husband who is apparently in Iran looking for a job…
Winner: Best Screenplay at Film Fajr Festival (2018)
Kambuzia Partovi was a writer and director, known for Closed Curtain (2013), Café Transit (2005) & Golnar (1989). He died on November 24, 2020 in Tehran due to complications from Covid-19.
His 2007 film Café Transit, which received the special mention at Mar del Plata film festival, was selected by Iran as its candidate for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He wrote screenplays for other directors, most notably Jafar Panahi’s The Circle. In 2013 he acted in and co-directed Closed Curtain with Panahi (Winner of Best Script at 2013 Berlinale). Partovi trained and supported many Iranian artists and filmmakers, most notably Bahman Ghobadi.
Now in its 10th year, Iranian Film Festival Australia is the only nation-wide Australian Festival dedicated to Iranian Cinema. Our aim is to showcase a diverse range of the best and most interesting of current Iranian cinema, which is recognized as one of the world’s most exhilarating national cinemas, and through cinema to introduce Iranian culture to other Australians, providing a better cultural understanding. Many Iranians consider IFFA the key Iranian cultural event in Australia.

The 10th Iranian Film Festival will be held in four capital cities of Australia as a physical event from 20 May – 16 June 2021. Online version of the festival will be held from 20-30 June 2021 Australia-wide.
