After the Act Offers a Meditative, Experimental Counterpoint to Algorithm-Driven Media

From the Australian filmmaking team behind acclaimed documentary Cats of Malta comes a new experimental feature film, After the Act, which has been hailed as an immersive cinematic work that transforms quiet observation into a hypnotic, reflective experience.

Shot in an improvisational style and paced in the tradition of French auteur Éric Rohmer, the film has been described by early audiences as “76 minutes of pure meditative ASMR,” offering a uniquely immersive viewing experience designed less for passive consumption and more for contemplation and emotional reflection. The film stars newcomer Laura Petracco, as well as Jacob Lefron and Jessica Sy.

At a time when scientists and cultural critics are increasingly questioning the effects of algorithm-driven media on attention spans and the effects of "brain rot", After the Act is a striking counterpoint and a contemplative work of experimental cinema that invites audiences to slow down, sit with emotion, and engage deeply with the screen.

Written by Ivan Malekin and directed by husband and wife filmmaking team Sarah Jayne Portelli and Malekin, both of Nexus Production Group, the film is positioned within contemporary experimental cinema and challenges conventional viewing habits.

After the Act will be available on all major digital platforms on June 26.
