Armenian Film Festival Australia expands to Adelaide

PRESS RELEASE

The Armenian Film Festival Australia (AFFA) is proud to announce its Adelaide premiere, marking the festival’s first-ever appearance in South Australia as part of its 9th edition celebrations.

Following growing interest from the Armenian community in Adelaide, the festival—founded in Sydney in 2016 and expanded to Melbourne in 2019—continues its national growth with Adelaide officially joining the program in 2025.

This milestone follows the recent launch of AFFA’s inaugural awards program, making 2025 a landmark year of expansion and recognition for Armenian cinema in Australia.

Adelaide audiences will enjoy two of the most acclaimed films from this year’s festival lineup:

r  Reverse Side of the Medal Winner of Best Feature – Narrative (2025), directed by Anna Maxim (Armenia). Based on a true story, the film follows a determined female weightlifter as she defies stereotypes and breaks barriers in sport.

r  Master of Destiny — A heartwarming and hilarious hit comedy about twin sisters, Janet and Anet, whose lives take a magical twist when one inherits their grandmother’s mystical powers.

Both films received sold-out screenings during the festival’s Sydney season earlier this year and are set to captivate Adelaide audiences this November.

“We are very excited to share award-winning Armenian cinema with audiences in Adelaide,” said co-founders and co-directors Hourie Demirjian and Margaret Chater. “After receiving so many requests over the years, we’re thrilled to finally bring the festival to Adelaide in 2025. As we celebrate our ninth year, we’re not only showcasing incredible films but also honouring Armenian filmmakers’ creativity and storytelling on a global stage.”

Now in its ninth year, the Armenian Film Festival Australia continues to celebrate the richness of Armenian culture, showcasing both emerging and established filmmakers to Australian audiences.
