MY FATHER’S SHADOW

Akinola Davies Jr. | Nigeria/UK | 2025

Akinola Davies Jr.’s first feature film, My Father’s Shadow, tells a personal and politically charged coming-of-age story set in Lagos during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis. The film follows an estranged father and his two young sons as they move through the city, facing growing unrest and uncertainty.

Inspired by Davies Jr.’s own experiences, the film combines personal moments with important historical events. It shows both the delicate bonds within a family and the impact of political turmoil. Starring Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, My Father’s Shadow follows Davies Jr.’s acclaimed short film Lizard, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and was nominated for a BAFTA.

Element Pictures and Fatherland Productions worked together on the film, which was developed by BBC Film and co-financed by the BFI. The Match Factory is handling worldwide sales, and MUBI is distributing the film in key regions. My Father’s Shadow introduces a strong new voice to international cinema.

THE PIANO ACCIDENT

Quentin Dupieux is back with The Piano Accident, a sharp and absurd comedy that pokes fun at digital fame, performance, and the spectacle of self-exposure. After a mysterious incident, she escapes to a remote mountain chalet, but soon finds herself being blackmailed by a journalist.

Written, directed, shot, and edited by Dupieux, the film showcases his unique, surreal style. He mixes deadpan humour with unsettling situations and unpredictable stories. The Piano Accident is both playful and sharp, continuing Dupieux’s look at artifice, identity, and the blurry line between performance and reality.

Julia Loktev’s My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow is a powerful documentary that follows independent Russian journalists as they deal with growing repression under Putin.
