ZaZa’s Legacy Launches with Focus on Prevention Policy and Community Safety Reform

ZaZa’s Legacy will officially launch on Thursday, 26 February, positioning itself as both a grief support charity and a prevention-focused organisation advocating for stronger choking safety measures across Western Australia.

Founded by bereaved father Brian Bwoga in honour of his son, Zaire “ZaZa,” the organisation has grown from personal tragedy into a structured advocacy effort aimed at strengthening prevention frameworks, improving public education, and equipping community facilities with practical life-saving resources.

The launch comes amid ongoing policy discussion regarding choking response devices in public facilities. While LifeVac has been supported by a number of Western Australian councils, other local governments have expressed hesitation, citing varying advice from medical authorities.

ZaZa’s Legacy is calling for informed, evidence-based dialogue — emphasising that choking response should involve layered safety planning and that supplementary devices should be considered as part of a broader emergency response toolkit.

Lives have already been saved through the use of LifeVac devices internationally.

ZaZa’s Legacy maintains that while such devices do not replace established first aid protocols, they represent another tool in the arsenal for choking emergencies — incidents that disproportionately impact the youngest and oldest members of the community, though can occur at any age.

“My son Zaire should still be here,” said Brian Bwoga.

“No family should have to experience the silence and devastation that follows a preventable tragedy. ZaZa’s Legacy is about ensuring communities are better prepared — through education, early response, and access to appropriate tools. This isn’t about replacing first aid. It’s about strengthening it.”

ZaZa’s Legacy is proof that purpose can rise from pain,” said Brian Bwoga.

“This Grand Opening is not only about honouring my son — it’s about building safer communities, supporting grieving families, and turning loss into lasting impact. We want families to know they are seen, supported, and never alone.”

The organisation’s policy priorities include:

  • Expanding public education on choking risks and immediate first response protocols
  • Supporting councils and community facilities to review safety preparedness
  • Advocating for clearer guidance around supplementary choking response devices
  • Strengthening support systems for families impacted by sudden death
  • Creating structured spaces for families navigating grief

The Grand Opening will be attended by Hon Dr Anne Aly MP, Hon Ayor Makur Chuot MLC, Albert Jacob, Caitlin Collins MLA, Liam Staltari MLA and Arthur Lih - Founder of LifeVac USA, alongside community leaders and safety advocates.

ZaZa’s Legacy states its objective is not to override established medical protocols, but to encourage stronger preparedness frameworks and ensure that families facing sudden loss are supported, not isolated.

The official launch will be held at The Iluka on Thursday, 26 February.
