Lesbian Space Princess producer Tom Phillips on ushering in a new era of Aussie comedy

Producer Tom Phillips is a bit of a mastermind at bringing great comedy together on screen. His work as writer on the excellent series Lucy & D.i.C shows he understands the importance of comedic sensibility, a mindset that has guided him well when it comes to the best Aussie comedy of the year, Lesbian Space Princess.

Tom is the producer of this explosive debut feature from Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs, and in the following conversation he talks through his creative process from Lucy & D.i.C to Lesbian Space Princess, the lessons he has learned along the way, and how his work at the burgeoning production house We Made a Thing Studios - affectionately known at WeMAT - is shaping how stories are told on screen in Australia.

In 2018, Tom was announced in the Ones to Watch group by Screen Producers Australia. In this chat we also talk about the role of the Adelaide Film Festival in spotlighting work like Lucy & D.i.C and Lesbian Space Princess.

Lesbian Space Princess is hitting Australian screens today - 11 September 2025 - alongside another essential Aussie film, Samuel Van Grinsven's Went Up the Hill. Make sure to head along and see both films in cinemas this weekend.
