Award Winning Aussie short film Over (or how to save the world) heads to Dances with Films

PRESS RELEASE

Over (or how to save the world), an Australian comedy short film co-directed by Duncan Ragg and Anna Phillips, has been selected to premiere at the celebrated ‘Dances With Films’ festival at the Chinese Theatre in LA, after previously winning Best Australian Comedy at the Academy Award and BAFTA Qualifying Flickerfest International Film Festival. Featuring standout performances from Adam Dunn (Elvis, The Fall Guy), Nick Boshier (Soul Mates, The Moth Effect) and newcomer James Carey, the film takes an unexpected journey into the heart of family, community, and the feelings of listlessness that come from growing up regionally with a disability.

About the Film

A father must confront his apathy towards the world’s big issues when his disabled son, who is terrified of open water, steals his boat and refuses to come back to shore until his Dad has saved the world. With an original score by Dan Mac (Art vs Science) and a cameo from 2006 Australian Idol winner Damien Leith, the film's combination of heart, humour, and a thrilling finale has made it an audience favourite.

"James Carey, who plays the son, is a revelation," said co-director Anna Phillips. "We wrote the film specifically for him. He’s a remarkable actor, and through his performance, we were able to bring an authentic voice to a story about loss, apathy, and the search for meaning in a world that feels far too big for any one person to affect."

A Film with Heart

Co-written by Phillips and Ragg, the film was deeply personal, inspired by conversations with James Carey about his own struggles after the loss of a friend, as well as the filmmakers' shared experiences living in regional Australia. “My partner was about to have a baby. We were talking about the feeling of being powerless in the face of big global problems," Ragg explains. "So instead of letting that despair consume us, we made a film about trying to make a difference through the prism of a son trying to change his father. In doing so, we created a community for all of us, and now James is flying to LA to represent the film on a global stage.”
