Retro Australian Sci-Fi Comedy Nova Star Launches Across Digital Platforms

Australian cult filmmaker Daniel Armstrong returns with Nova Star, a retro-futuristic sci-fi adventure blending cosmic action, practical effects, comedy and old-school pulp energy into a galaxy-spanning ride inspired by the VHS era of filmmaking.

Set in an 80s retro futureworld, Mack and her robot co-worker Spanners clean toilets aboard the spaceship Nova Queen. When an ancient star fragment becomes embedded in Mack’s skull, they are pursued across the galaxy by Kill-Bots, space pirates, bounty hunters and an evil Space Queen determined to destroy reality itself.

Premiering at Monster Fest in 2021, Nova Star continues Armstrong’s run of distinctive Australian independent genre films following titles including MurderDromeSheborg MassacreFrom Parts Unknown: Fight Like a Girl and Tarnation. The film stars Daisy Masterman, Mitchell Brotz, Jenna Dwyer, Whitney Duff and Amy-Ann Broomhall, combining handmade practical effects, retro sci-fi production design and tongue-in-cheek humour with a strong DIY filmmaking spirit.

As Armstrong put it during the original Nova Star production campaign: “Our objective has always been to make films for fans.”

Nova Star is now available digitally on Prime Video and Tubi. Physical copies are also available on Blu-ray and DVD via Amazon.
