The largest public human rights arts and film event in Australia, the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (HRAFF), returns for 2023 in Naarm/Melbourne from 4-9 May 2023.
Featuring stories from Iran, Brazil, Ireland, Lebanon, Venezuela, South Sudan, Mexico, US, Canada, and from First Nations storytellers here in Australia, HRAFF embraces a vision for a vibrant and equitable human rights community, creating a festival where attendees can experience nuanced storytelling, urgent artworks, and energetic cinema.
The film screenings, art exhibitions and panel discussions at the festival will explore human rights issues, including social justice, civil liberties, environmentalism, with prominent activists, filmmakers, and artists in attendance.
Some of the HRAFF highlights include Australian documentary The Last Daughter, a story about the Stolen Generation that comes from filmmakers Brenda Matthews and Nathaniel Schmidt, presented by Hardie Grant; Alice Diop’s masterful drama Saint Omer about a mother on trial for abandoning her child, presented by VicScreen; and the opening night Australian premiere of Kash Kash – Without Feathers, We Can’t Live, Lea Najjar’s story of pigeons in Beirut.
