Perth’s Strange Festival Awakens a Long Dormant Iconic Cinema with REVIVAL

PRESS RELEASE

The boundary-pushing Strange Festival presents the inaugural season of EXHUMED at Perth’s original 1950’s arthouse cinema, the Liberty Theatre, from June 20 to July 2.  This pop-up revival cinema is ditching the digital to screen cult and classic movies exclusively on 35mm and 16mm. Tickets for the retro-futuristic cinema experience are now on sale at www.strangefestival.com.au.

For the first time since 1997, the projectors at the Liberty on Barrack Street will be firing up for the 13-day ticketed film festival, screening nightly with day sessions on Wednesdays.  Many of the film prints are rare – some marking the final screening of the film to make history at Exhumed.

Featuring an eclectic mix of genres, this nostalgic trip down memory lane allows a new generation to enjoy films that have transcended time in all their celluloid glory, and a rebirth of a CBD landmark.

“This marks a true renaissance for the Liberty,” says Jess Oakley, the visionary curator and creator behind Strange Festival and Exhumed Cinema. “We are delighted to present a remarkable collection of films that have defied convention, sparked conversation, inspired trends, and shaped the cinematic landscape,” she says.

Highlights include A Night of OZPLOITATION Q&A event on Saturday 24 June at 6.00pm with special guests multiple ARIA award winning and AFI award winning filmmaker Mark Hartley, and renowned producer Antony I. Ginnane.  Evoking déjà vu are screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in its 50th Anniversary year – taking place during the traditional Friday night slot that Liberty hosted in its heyday.

The film program sits alongside activations & installations in the adjacent basement, building and laneways.

Children, concession, and adult tickets range from $13.30 to $21.45 (includes online booking fee), with Q&A/event tickets priced at $41.85.  Tickets are also available at the box office from June 20.  Liberty Theatre is located at 81 Barrack Street, Perth.
